7th January. Spanish gathering at Culture Club.

Date for your diary- Wednesday, 7th January.

Dear Friend of the Society,

Wow - 46 people at yesterday's Get Together! Thank you so much to all
those who attended, especially those from Peru, Venezuela, Colombia and
Spain, who, of course, gave us so much support in our quest to practise
and improve our Spanish. Special thanks also, must go to A Mai, who
stepped in at the last minute to give an entertaining talk on Spanish
traditions at Christmas time. Tony had to go to Beijing and was unable to
give his talk.

As you see from the above, our next Get Together will take place on
January 7th. Please note this in your diary and endeavour
to come - everybody who has an interest in speaking Spanish is very
welcome to attend. Tony, from Hawaii, has said he will give an assisted
talk on that State.

In addition, there will be another opportunity to practise your Spanish in
congenial surroundings on December 27th. Please see http://espaniolenhongkong.blogspot.com for
details.

Finally, thanks to Lennon, the owner of CultureClub ( www.cultureclub.com.hk ), for
looking after us so well in our Get Togethers, and thank you to all those
of you who have supported our gatherings in 2008 and who have made it such a
successful year.

Happy Christmas everyone.

Winnie's trip to Buenos Aires. Pictures with friends. Dancing!!

Winnie's trip to Buenos Aires. Las violetas

Here some picture of Winnie and friends in "Las violetas" a traditional Buenos Aires coffee shop.

History:Buenos Aires City, founded twice by the Rio de la Plata (Silver River), grew up truning its back to the river and suffered the same swings and changes as its politics. Some bouildings were pulled down and rebuilt at least three times. Such is the case of the Colon Opera House and the House of Government. Each time, buildings were submitted to different construction canons, first colonial, then Italian and finally French. French archicteture was dominant at the trun of the 20th century and French school architects--keen on the Ecole de Beaux Arts de Paris guidelines--,built the city big boulevards and buildings in that style.

Rivadavia Avenue was a carriage road and joinde Plaza de Mayo with the city Far West towards Flores. In 1870, the yellow fever epidemic spreaded and the wealthy families in Buenos Aires looked for shelter in the city highlands and moved to Flores, a summer country house neighborhood, and other areas. The western railways joined Flores with the city center. In 1876, the Compania Anglo Argentina (Anglo Argentine Corporation) built one of the first streetcars pulled by hourses to be seen on Rivadavia Avenue.

In 1880 economic prosperity boosted a big expansion fo the city and its suburbs. New buildings and shops bloomed. The "big village" was growing into a city.

Although the Medrano and Rivadavia Avenue intersection is only 4 km. (2.5miles) far from Plaza de Mayo, it was considered to be "at the back of the beyond."

Right on the corner of those streets, a coffee house with golden chandelliers and Italian marble was built. Its inauguration date was September 21st 1884 and even secretary Carlos Pellegrini, future Argentine President at the time, was present, arriving in a special streetcar and accompanied by many of his distinguished friends. Politicians, artists and writers of those times, like Roberto Arlt, would take it as their meeting point, they would seat round the tables of this coffee house. But it was not until the 1920's that the current building--with its windows, its curved glass doors, its French stained--glass windows, and its Italian marble floors--was made. The restored stained- glass windows were created to decorate and brighten the pleasant coffeehouse environment in those times, where people would spend their leisure time in a very select environment. In 1998, the building was declared "Buenos Aires CIty's Heritage Site" by the Buenos Aires Legislative Body. For several years, before the last restauration, the building was shut and almost abandoned. The restauration fo the building, its components and the stained-glass windows was started in January 2001 and finished in June.

Winnie's trip to Buenos Aires. Caminito

Here are some pictures that Winnie sent from "Caminito".

Caminito is an area of Buenos Aires which is the first free outdoor museum and it was opened in 1959. It is located in the neighborhood of La Boca, which is anything but a museum. La Boca is the oldest port in Buenos Aires and is rich in history and exotic tales.

Caminito is painted in many colors because the immigrants, mostly from Genoa Italy, worked on the shipyards there and used the pint from the ships to pint their small dwellings, called conventillos. The Caminito we see today is a life size replica of what it used to be like at the beginning of the 1900's when millions of European immigrants came to Buenos Aires seeking a better life.
The name Caminito is taken from a famous Tango song that depicts a small country road in Argentina. Which alludes to the Tango history found within this interesting neighborhood in Buenos Aires. The immigrants would socialize in the brothels and it was there that Tango found its feet.

17th. December. Spanish gathering at Culture Club.

Dear Friend of the Society,

Thank you to the 32 people who attended yesterday's Get Together, especially Sergio, who gave a lively and interesting talk on the origins of Mexican Culture. We had 4 Mexicans at the gathering, so that country was well represented. Thank you to all the first language Spanish speakers who came. You helped us to practise our Spanish in a productive manner - your attendance is always valued.

Our next Get Together will be held at CultureClub (www.cultureclub.com.hk), 15 Elgin Street, Soho District, Hong Kong on Wed., 17th December, starting at 7.00. Tony, also from Mexico, has said he would be delighted to talk, and lead a discussion on the different ways, people of different cultures celebrate Christmas - or something like that! Whatever happens we will have fun, as well as get valuable Spanish practice.

Some regulars will unfortunately be out of town, so please make a special effort to come along if you are available - the more the merrier. Remember that Lennon will provide drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first) and some free snacks.

Dear Friend of the Society,

Thank you to those of you who attended the Get Together on the 5th. I have been told it was a success, although I am not sure how people were there? Many thanks to Fathers Guillermo and Sergio for the talk on the jungles of Peru - I'm sure it was very interesting. Also my thanks go to Ronaldo, for hosting the meeting, and Lennon for providing the participants with a welcoming venue.

You will also find attached a flyer which gives details of the Society's forthcoming Annual Dinner and how to book a place. This event is always enjoyable and you are very welcome to attend.

Date for your Diary - Wednesday 24 September

Dear Friend of La Sociedad Hispanica,

Thank you to all those who helped make yesterday such a memorable Get Together. Unfortunately, Jan wasn't able to give the eagerly anticipated talk because of a last minute commitment at work. However, the 32 people who attended helped to make it a truly enjoyable evening. Thank you once again.

Our next meeting in CultureClub will be held on 24 September from 7.00 onwards. It is hoped that Veronica will be able to give her talk on Iran. Please note the date in your diaries - you will find the gatherings provide an excellent opportunity to practise your Spanish. Yesterday we were fortunate enough to have a number of native speakers of the language to support us in our effort. Thank you to them, as well as, of course, to Lennon, the owner of CultureClub.

26th July, Spanish gathering. Zona Rosa.

Dear all,

Sorry for the short notice about our next monthly Spanish gathering. But I was looking for a new place to enjoy our gathering in a relax and quiet environment .

The gatherings at Epoch were very nice and everybody like them, but during the last months the area become more and more trendy and with that more and more people. So, the place became a little noisy and more populated. That’s why we decide to move in other place according with our needs.

Then our next Spanish gathering will be this 26 th of July at Causeway bay (one block from SOGO, open until 3 am.) Zona Rosa 2f, 511 Lockhard Road, Causeway bay from 8 pm as always.

I’ll see you there.

16th July. Spanish gathering at culture club.

Dear Friend of la Sociedad Hispanica,

Thank you to everyone who turned up to last night’s Get Together (25/06). Because of uncertainty associated with the weather only 14 people attended, but we had a good time, spoke a lot of Spanish, and enjoyed the free snacks provided by Lennon.

Please try to make the next gathering on Wednesday, July 16, in CultureClub, 15 Elgin Street, Soho District, Central. It will give you a good opportunity to have a chat in Spanish. If you are nearer the Beginner than the Advanced satage, you will find everyone is very friendly and supportive. I hope there will also be a talk on an interesting topic.

4th June. Spanish gathering at Culture club.

Dear Friend of the Spanish Society,

A reminder that our next Get Together will take place this coming Wednesday, June 4, from 7.15 , in CultureClub, 15 Elgin Street, Soho District Since the last correspondence, Tony, from Mexico, has very kindly offered to give a talk on Mayan Culture. Please come to give him your support, as well as to utilize your Spanish in friendly surroundings.

Lennon, the owner of CultureClub, who has given us such support over the last three years, has asked me to remind you all that he would appreciate it if at least one drink is bought by each participant - he is after all running a business. Apparently at the last meeting some people brought their own drink - a practice which I'm sure the vast majority of you will agree is certainly not acceptable, especially when Lennon provides us with free snacks and drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first), as well as a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Please also find attached a photo of a few of us (28 people came) who attended the last meeting. I hope you can see that we all were having a good time. You are very welcome to join us on Wednesday.

Hasta pronto,

Chris Stubbs - Member of the Society.

Date for Your Diary - Wed. June 4 (7.15 onwards)

Date for Your Diary - Wed. June 4 (7.15 onwards)

Dear Friend of the La Sociedad Hispanica,

Thanks first must go to Cristina who, despite technical difficulties, at yesterday's gathering gave a splendid talk about her impressions of Cuba. We had loads of questions and comments to make and it was wonderful, once again, to have someone whose first language isn't Spanish give such an impressive presentation. Well done and thank you.

Thanks should also go to Lennon, who provided the comfortable and relaxed location, as well as free snacks, in which 28 of us were able to practise our Spanish.

Our next Get Together will be on June 4 and anybody with an interest in conversing in Spanish, at whatever level, is invited to join us. If you are a student of Spanish it's a brilliant opportunity to try out what you have been learning in class. If you are a native speaker please come and support us in our efforts to master your wonderful language. As usual it will be held in CultureClub, 15 Elgin street, Soho District.

As yet, I have no speaker lined up, so if anybody would like to give a talk on a topic of their choice please get in touch.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other notices:-

1) Marcela, from Argentina, will be hosting her monthly gathering at Epoch on May 31st. As with the above, it is a good opportunity to practise your Spanish.

For more details visit: http://espaniolenhongkong.blogspot.com/ .

2) There is shortly going to be a Fund Raising Party for the Mexican Dragon Boat team. For details see the attachment above. Sorry I wasn't able to attach the flyer, but there is enough information in the note (I hope!).

3) Don't forget the Annual Dinner. Details also above.

We hope that as many native speakers as possible will be able to attend to give us their valuable support. Don't forget that drinks will be available at Happy Hour prices (after the first) and free snacks will be available, courtesy of Lennon, the friendly and supportive owner of CultureClub.

14th. May. Spanish gathering at culture club.

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY - WED. 14 MAY (GET TOGETHER NO. 35)

Dear Friend of La Sociedad Hispanica,

Those of you who attended yesterday's gathering, and there were 33 participants in total (!), will no doubt have enjoyed the spirited and interesting talk given by Karen (photo attached - dark cardigan). She spoke of previously unknown relatives from the Mexican town of Tamazula who came to visit her family in San Diego. She got on with them so well she returned with them to Tamazula and a lot of the talk was taken up with the cultural differences experienced there - really entertaining - thank you Karen.

As usual the evening was an enjoyable social experience as well as an opportunity to practise and improve our Spanish. There were a number of relative beginners as well as native speakers.

Please note the date of the next Get Together in your diary. I hope as many of you as possible can make it. As if you couldn't forget, the venue will be CultureClub, 15 Elgin Street, Soho District and we will start at 7.15.

As you will see from the other photo, Lennon, the friendly owner of CultureClub, kindly provides with a pretty ideal environment (quiet, comfortable, free snacks, drinks available at Happy Hour prices - after the first)

Do come along and practise your Spanish. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Saludos,

Chris Stubbs

23rd April. Spanish gathering at Culture club.

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY - WED. 23 APRIL.

Dear Friend of the Society,

Thank you to all those who made last session so enjoyable - especially Damaris , who gave a well researched and interesting talk on Spanish language cinema. 28 people turned up and had, I think, a good time, with loads of Spanish spoken and listened to. Of course, all of us who are struggling to get to grips with the language give our special thanks to all the native speakers who attended, giving us invaluable help and support.

At the next meeting on April 23, Karen has promised to give a talk on Tamazula, a place in Mexico where she went on holiday. The name is enough to show that it should be fascinating!

Hope as many of you as possible can make the next gathering.

Saludos,

Chris Stubbs

Exhibition "Juan Soriano" .28th. March. Details.

Press Release
The Consulate General of Mexico announces the exhibition “Juan Soriano:
on paper, tapestry, bronze and silver”
The opening ceremony will be held on March 28th at the Exhibition Hall of the
Hong Kong City Hall
Hong Kong, March 25, 2008 –The Consulate General of Mexico in Hong Kong
announced today the incoming exhibition “Juan Soriano: on paper, tapestry, bronze
and silver” that will be held in the Hong Kong City Hall exhibition hall from March 29th to
April 15th, 2008.
Within this frame, the opening ceremony will take place next Friday 28th March, at 6pm.
The ceremony will be presided over by the Consul General of Mexico, Mr. Mario Leal,
Mr. Marek Keller, curator of the exhibitions and Chairman of the Fundación Juan Soriano
y Marek Keller, A.C. and by Dr. Louis NG, Assistant Director of Heritage and Museums
of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of Hong Kong.

Juan Soriano (Guadalajara 1920- Mexico city 2006) was certainly, one of the most
outstanding Mexican plastic artists of the XXth Century. For more than 70 years he
practiced a fruitful and creative art, embracing all kind of genres: engraving, drawing,
painting, sculpture and tapestry.
Born in Guadalajara (Mexico), Soriano moved to Mexico City in 1935, in the
effervescence of the post-revolutionary period, where he was surrounded by the main
exponents of the major intellectual and artistic streams of the last century. He was
contemporary of the Mexican painters Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco
and the Nobel Laureated poet and writer Octavio Paz .
Marta’s Portraits, 1934.
While Soriano was nourished by the historical events and the
artistic and intellectual influences of his time, his artistic
trajectory advances in different genres. He starts the path with a
period focused on the portrait and the self-portrait, reaching
apprehension of the spiritual and psychological complexity of its
characters. His generous style develops through the
experimentation of the “inside to the outside” painting.
Being true to himself, Soriano rejects the ongoing “Muralist
movement” and sets himself apart by becoming a profound
original artist who conceives art as a rebellious act, as a
transgression from the world.
Venue sponsored by:
In 1951, Soriano moves out to Rome and afterwards to Paris where he lives for a long
period. This stage blooming with freshness will be characterized with a capricious and
colorful fauna.
Later, Soriano concentrates in sculpture, he started using terracotta
and later on other materials as bronze and silver, keeping as main
source of inspiration the natural world dressed with humor and
graciousness.
Transversal to the very different expressions of his art, liberty is always
present as a constant factor. In 2005, he is awarded with the
“Velazquez Prize for Plastic Arts”. During the ceremony he expressed:
“If Velazquez rebelled against beauty, I feel that I have rebelled
against painting”.
Doves. Silver
During his career, his works featured in 130 exhibitions held in more than 20 different
countries including France, USA, the former USSR and China.
The exhibition “Juan Soriano on Paper, Tapestry, Bronze and Silver” has been
entrusted to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the “Juan Soriano and Marek
Keller Foundation”, while the venue has been sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural
Services Department of Hong Kong. It comprises 28 paintings, 12 silver sculptures, 13
bronze sculptures and 5 tapestries. These works were realized from 1934 to 2005,
showing a generous overview of the prolific and uninterrupted work of Juan Soriano
through several stages of his artistic life.
For the Consulate General of Mexico in the Hong Kong SAR, it is an honor to present for
the first time in this world class city of Asia, an exhibition dedicated to the work of this
splendid Mexican artist.

Spanish gathering. 2 nd April. Culture club.

Dear Friend of the Society,

At the next Get Together in CultureClub this coming Wednesday, April 2, Damaris, from Venezuela, would like to lead a discussion on "El Cine Hispano Parlante" (Spanish speaking cinema). She would like people who have experience of watching Spanish and Latin Movies to bring some of their ideas to the "tertulia" (in this case a meeting to chat about an aspect of the Arts).

Apologies if this all sounds rather daunting - just come along anyway and enjoy practising your Spanish and meeting some very nice people. A photo of last time's meeting is attached and you will see that we endeavour to enjoy ourselves.

Please try to make it as near as possible to the starting time of 7.15. In this way you won't miss the talk/discussion and we will have a good selection of people to chat with. In addition you will be able to enjoy the free snacks kindly provided by Lennon, the friendly and supportive owner of CultureClub, as well as drinks at Happy Hour prices (after the first).

Saludos,

Chris Stubbs
